Gonorrhea rose to epidemic proportions in the United States in the 1960s and 1970s. Fortunately, this widespread STD has gradually declined substantially since a national control program was instituted in 1975. Gonorrhea is sometimes referred to as the clap. In 2001, there were 7,759 cases of gonorrhea reported in Mississippi for a rate of 273 per 100,000. Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Gonorrhea is caused by a bacterium that can grow and multiply easily in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract in women and men.

Gonorrhea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae . The disease can affect mucous linings in the vagina, cervix, penis, rectum, throat, and eyes. Gonorrhea is treated with antibiotics . Antibiotic treatment, if taken exactly as directed, normally cures gonorrhea infections. Gonorrhea that is present in the cervix or urethra can be diagnosed in a laboratory by testing a urine sample.

Gonorrhea is spread through sexual intercourse, vaginal, oral, and anal. People who practice anal intercourse can get gonorrhea of the rectum. Gonorrhea infects the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes in females, and the urethra in females and males. The bacteria can also grow in the mouth, throat, and anus. Gonorrhea is easy to treat. If you have gonorrhea, you will need to take an antibiotic.

Gonorrhea can spread into the uterus and fallopian tubes, resulting in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID affects more than 1 million American women every year and can cause tubal (ectopic) pregnancy and infertility in as many as 10 percent of infected women. Gonorrhea infections of the mouth and throat are usually without symptoms. If present, symptoms include soreness and redness in the mouth or throat. Gonorrhea is one of the oldest known sexually transmitted diseases. It is estimated that over one million women are currently infected with gonorrhea.

Gonorrhea can be transmitted to both male and female partners during vaginal, anal and oral sex from a partner infected in his or her throat, vagina, urethra or anus. Gonorrheal infections are completely curable with antibiotics. Though fully treatable, gonorrhea can cause future health and fertility problems should it go untreated.

Gonorrhea used to be easily treated but is starting to become resistant to certain drugs meaning in the future it may get even harder to treat. When taking the medication make sure to read the instructions on the medication and follow them exactly and remember that after your gonorrhea is treated it can easily be caught again and may become harder to treat the second time. Gonorrhea infection in the throat doesn't usually cause symptoms, such as a sore throat. Gonorrhea is often associated with the presence of other sexually transmitted diseases. About half of the women with gonorrhea are also infected with chlamydia, another very common STD that can result in sterility.
